Wes Craven: “I looked for things in each person that I thought would be appealing to the audience and I was hoping would form my core group for the movie. I had seen so many actors for this movie I finally just ended up going on instinct. Depp wasn’t even close to the way the Glen character was written. Johnny came in looking rumpled and peaked, but he had a gleam about him – he had that look that directors look for, even though I could never really explain what that look actually looks like. It was my daughter who really pushed me over the edge as far as my decision went. She just flipped for him – she found him hypnotically good looking and very charming. Her overanimate reaction to him made me cast him radically against the initial idea of how Glen would look.”

"What were they going to write? ‘Johnny Depp was great as the kid who dies?’" (Johnny's response when he was questioned on not being mentioned in the film reviews.)
“I read the part of the screenplay that I was shown that described the character I was auditioning for, and he was described as this big blond surfer jock type, and here I was this little scrawny pale little guy with long dark hair starched to death with five day old hairspray.”
