“I told Hunter that I intended on being a pain in the ass.  He never kicked me out, which was good.”
Gilliam: “Each time he’d come back with more of Hunter’s clothes and things.  He was stealing his soul, really, secretly, which Hunter was apparently quite happy to go along with.”
JD: “It’s weird with Hunter.  It’s more sort of watching the way he thinks. You can see the wheels turning and you can see an idea coming.  That was really the key for me because he’s thinking constantly.  He’s very, very quick and there are no lulls.”
Hunter regarding Johnny's performance: “He worries too much.  He couldn’t possibly do an accurate job.  He’s too short.”
Gilliam: “We had disagreements on certain things; I would have been disappointed in him if he hadn’t banged heads with me at least a few times – that is how the creative process works.  But I found that when these disagreements happened, we both ended up agreeing to each do it the other way, and then we would decide together what way worked the best.  He is a great collaborator that way – extremely cooperative.”
“I got an offer to do a shampoo commercial during the shooting of FALILV.  I can’t remember where it was from, but it was for a lot of money.  My agent calls me and says, ‘Listen’, and she tells me about this commercial offer for a ton of money that will only be shown in the one European country.  I kept telling her, “Tracey. I’m bald.  Listen to me, I’m bald!”
“It certainly is completely abstract, not only visually but verbally as well.  From my point of view, I have to rely on my director to keep me on track.  Again, we were trying to make the movie as the best version we could make of Hunter’s book.”
Benicio del Toro: “I loved working with Johnny.  It is always great to work with another actor who you can see putting the same stuff into a role that you are.  He had the head shaved, and he did this weird thing with his walk.  What is great about working with him also is the fact that he respects everyone around him.  He respects his fellow actors and the director and the crew guys.  He had a great respect for Hunter that was quite tangible on a daily basis.”
